What Does "Not Disapproved" Mean?

Buying a handgun in Maryland is a legal process, therefore there is some legal terminology involved. It doesn't make much sense to most people, unless you are a lawyer or a judge.

State form 77R for buying a handgun can have a few different statuses assigned to them. One of them is "Not Disapproved". This term is a good thing - just like "not guilty" in court. Your lawyer doesn't have to prove your innocence, they just have to show you probably did not commit the crime. On your 77R, State Police just couldn't find a reason to say "no" on your application, hence the "not disapproved" status. Just as in court - the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence for the jury to find you guilty. It doesn't you aren't guilty, just that they failed to prove it.

So, when you see "Not Disapproved" in the email you receive from State Police at the end of your 7-day waiting period, smile and return to your dealer to pick up your handgun,,, NEWGUNDAY!!
